“I Had a Little Nut Tree”

Pen and ink

2008

11” x 7”

In the Private Collection of Charles & Mary Mather

“I had a little nut tree, nothing did it bear, but a silver nutmeg and a golden pear.  The king of Spain’s daughter came to visit me, and all for the sake of my little nut tree.”

Based on the nursery rhyme of the same name, this pen and ink illustration plays with the concept of decorative borders and the power of white space.  Some interpret the rhyme to be an account of Kathryn of Aragon’s arrival to England to meet her (first) future husband, Arthur (Henry VIII’s older brother).
